Gedo Senki (Tales from Earthsea), an anime feature film

I watched this yesterday and was impressed. It’s the first anime film I’ve watched, so it’s hard to compare with others, but the quality of the animation was top-notch. A welcome change from Disney fare.

More importantly, the plot was faithful to LeGuin’s vision, if not her actual novels. It’s basically The Farthest Shore conflated with Tehanu, with elements of A Wizard of Earthsea thrown in, but the universe is recognisable, and the characters look like you’d expect them to.

The magic is Earthsea magic, not flashy, but powerful — no death rays, no blasting spells a la computer RPGs, rather tapping into the underlying structure of the world. It’s hard to explain, but it’s one of the things that make LeGuin’s fantasy world so much better than others.

This movie is highly recommended.

Getting native 1400x1050 resolution with Xorg i810 drivers on a Dell Latitude D505

I’ve been using Ubuntu 7.10 on a Latitude D505 for a while now, and I’ve always been disappointed with the screen resolution. The max I could get was 1280x1024, while the native resolution is 1400x1050.

I recently had to reconfigure X on this machine (dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg) and chose the intel driver (recommended by the configure script). However, it turns out that this driver hangs the machine when you close the lid. The older driver i810 works in this regard, but the max resolution is too low.

The solution is to use the 915resolution application. This does some weird hacking of the video BIOS to allow Linux to use the full resolution.

Using it in Ubuntu is a breeze. Simply install the .deb package and reboot.

Isobel Hadley-Kamptz:

My Patrick O’Brian “reviews”

Just capsules.

  1. Master and Commander
  2. Post Captain
  3. HMS Surprise
  4. The Mauritius Command
  5. Desolation Island
  6. The Fortune of War

I’ve read the entire series multiple times, but haven’t written reviews for all the novels. If you want more information, check out the Patrick O’Brian wiki.

The Lazysphere - a working definition - is a group of bloggers who I won’t name by name, but you can spot them a mile away. Rather than create new ideas or pen thoughtful essays, they simply glom on to the latest news with another “me too” blog post.

OMG this is such an awesome post!!11!! I so totally agree with it!! It deserves to be Dugg sooo much!!!

Bottom-posting in Gmail

I firmly believe that posting a reply to an email at the end of a message rather than at the beginning. This is especially important in mailing lists.

I’ve recently re-joined The Gunroom, a mailing list with a pretty high traffic volume. I want to be a good lissun and have been diligently paging down to the end of messages, snipping as I went.

I recently found a Greasemonkey script that automates the scrolling down, setting the editing caret at the end of the message instead of at the top.

The script can be found here for the new Gmail interface. It’s based on this script for the old interface.

Here’s how to enable this feature.

  1. You need to use Firefox. If you don’t, this script is not for you. (Greasemonkey may work in other browsers too.)
  2. Install Greasemonkey. This is a Firefox plugin that enables you to use customized Javascript scripts on different websites.
  3. Visit one of the script pages mentioned above. Click the button labelled “Install this script” and install from the pop-up.
  4. You’re done!

Another script that might be interesting for traditionalists is Gmail Fixed Font.

Patrick O’Brian commentary

I’m re-reading Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin series for the umpteenth time. There are some passages that warrant more investigation. I’m sorta-kinda-hoping planning to write some posts about them in the future.

Update 2008-01-06: I’ll be posting links related to O’Brian in my del.icio.us feed marked with the tag “POB”.
